You’ve invested in correction, coating or PPF — now let’s keep that finish looking mint. The secret is a simple, repeatable routine that fits NZ conditions and respects the chemistry of your protection. Here’s the Mat’s Detailing aftercare plan we use on clients’ vehicles (and our own) across Hamilton and the Waikato.
The safe wash (do this every 2–4 weeks)
Pre-rinse: Cool paint, shade if possible. Thorough rinse to remove loose grit.
Decon pre-wash (optional): Snow foam dwell 3–5 min, then rinse to reduce contact load.
Two buckets + grit guards: One shampoo (pH-neutral), one rinse. Use a premium 70/30 microfibre wash pad for maximum safety and glide.
Top-down method: Clean glass/roof first, then upper panels, then lowers last. Rinse mitt/pad often.
Final rinse + sheeting: Low-pressure water to sheet off most water.
Drying: Soft microfibre drying towel + blower around mirrors, trims and badges to chase drips.
Finishing touch: Use a coating-safe spray topper while drying for extra slickness and hydrophobics.
What to avoid
Automatic brush washes and cheap sponges
Strong degreasers on coated or PPF surfaces
Dirty towels (always wash microfibres separately, low heat, no fabric softener)
Aggressive clay on protected finishes (clay only during decon services)
Monthly/quarterly decontamination
Even coated vehicles pick up iron and tar. Every 3–4 months, we recommend:
Iron remover on paint and wheels (cool surfaces only), rinse thoroughly.
Tar remover on bug/tar spots, gentle agitation, rinse.
Light clay only if needed, with plenty of lube.
Re-top with a coating-safe spray sealant.
Spot fixes: bugs, bird bombs and water spots
Bugs/bird: Soften with a damp towel or bug remover ASAP; don’t scrub dry.
Water spots: Use a spot remover or white vinegar/water mix on cool paint. If etching remains, we can lightly polish the area without compromising protection.
Marine specifics
Salt is relentless. Rinse with fresh water after every outing, especially stainless, aluminium and non-skid. Use marine-safe shampoo and apply a silica topper monthly. For vinyl and clears, use purpose-made cleaners and UV protectants. Schedule a quarterly de-salt service and annual inspection.
RV & caravan specifics
Work in sections from the roof down. Use an extended pole with a microfibre head to reduce marring, and a blower to clear water from seals and vents. Pay attention to black streaks early — the right cleaner prevents abrasion. Book a biannual decon and topper to keep surfaces slick.
Motorbike specifics
Cover intakes and electronics; avoid aggressive cleaners near brakes/chain. Use gentle wash on tanks and fairings; dry with blower to chase water from tight areas. Metal/chrome benefits from a mild metal polish and a coating-safe sealant.
Seasonal calendar (Hamilton/Waikato)
Summer (UV high): Fortnightly safe washes, monthly toppers.
Autumn: Monthly washes, decon before winter.
Winter: Monthly washes (road film), blow-dry emphasis, check seals.
Spring: Decon + inspection detail; prep for road trips/boating.

FAQs
Can I ever use a carwash?
Touch-free can be okay in a pinch, but hand washing is best for swirl-free results.
What products void warranties?
Harsh acids/alkalis and abrasive polishes can affect coatings/PPF. If unsure, ask us — we’ll point you to safe choices.
How do I dry without marring?
Use plush microfibre and a blower for crevices. Never drag a towel over dry dust.
